The capital city of Jammu and Kashmir – Srinagar – is renowned for its twin lakes called the Dal Lake and The Nigeen Lake. Both the Lakes are not far from each other, and even aren’t much different. Dal Lake is the second largest lake in Jammu and Kashmir. This is situated in the centre of Srinagar city with major tourist destinations like Mughal Gardens, Hazratbal Shrine and Dalgate aligning with it. It is known for its major water activities like Shikara rides, Floating market and Houseboat rides.
Nigeen Lake, located along the hill of Hari Parbat in Srinagar, is connected with Dal Lake via a little string. It is known for its peace and serene environment, vast poplar and willow trees and Nigeen Club. Nigeen club is also hailed for its bird life and flowers and the water is relatively cleaner than Dal.
Both Dal as well as Nigeen Lake is hailed for their houseboats. Houseboats are floating huge boats who act as hotels of residence with all the basic amenities available. Houseboats in Dal and Nigeen Lake are vastly famous for their art, craft and cozy environment
Dal Lake is considered to be more active while as Nigeen lake is considered more serene. Dal Lake is usually considered the major lake and covers an area of almost 22 square kilometers while as the Nigeen lake – which is smaller – covers a minimal area of almost 2.7 square kilometers.
There are as many as 700 houseboats in Dal Lake which makes it a major tourist destination. Apart from this Dal Lake also has more than 4500 Shikara that work on daily basis.
In Nigeen Lake, there are just a couple hundred houseboats and Shikara. Nigeen is not much frequented by tourists
No, major migratory birds are in Nigeen Lake. They include Mallards, Common Teals, Bitterns and tufted ducks.
