Ladakh Valley

Ladakh or ‘Land of High Passes’ is a barren but beautiful region located in the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Sharing its eastern border with Tibet, Ladakh has  Lahaul and  Spiti valleys to the south and Kashmir Valley to the west. Strategically located on ancient trade routes, Ladakh lies between the Kunlun Mountains in the north and the Himalayas in the south. The region originally consisted of Baltistan Valley, Indus Valley, Zanskar, Lahaul, Spiti, Aksai Chen, and Ngari. Its snow-capped peaks, clear blue skies, and views of barren mountains, broken only by blue spiraling rivers, attract many fearless travelers. Tourism is the main source of livelihood for Ladakhis. The Indian Army maintains a strong presence in Ladakh due to its strategic location. The natural beauty, rugged terrain, and majestic mountains have made Ladakh a favorite among mountaineers. The remote location and height of Ladakh are not suitable for those who want a quick vacation. You will need time to adapt to the weather conditions of Ladakh. However, due to the lack of modernity, its natural and rustic splendor has been preserved. Bikers across India reach their favorite destination – Ladakh. Year after year, a large number of riders and adventure tourists visit Ladakh from June to September to enjoy its magnificent sights. The road to Leh is known as one of the best in the country. Attractions like Pangong Tso and Nubra Valley are large landscapes and tourist attractions. There is no doubt that Ladakh is India’s best off-beat destination.

The Nubra Valley is the northernmost part of Jammu and Kashmir. Located about 150 km from Leh, the Nubra Valley is known as the Gardens of Ladakh and was originally called Ldumra, meaning the Valley of Flowers. Surrounded by snow-capped Himalayan ranges, the Nubra Valley is located on a sandwich between Tibet and Kashmir. The view of the valley is charming and dazzling. During the winter, the entire valley looks like a lunar landscape (the reason for calling it a moorland) and in summer it is full of greenery.

To reach the Nubra Valley, you’ll have to cross the amazing Kurdung La, the world’s highest motorable pass. The confluence of the Shiwak and Nubra rivers crosses the wide and flat Nubra valley. From a distance, the valley looks dry and arid. However, the valley consists mainly of agricultural land. Not surprisingly, the valley has acquired the magnificent garden of Ladakh.

The cold desert between Diskit and Hundur is another attraction for tourists. Tourists gather in the cold desert to see the sand dunes and enjoy a ride on the camels of bacteria (Bacterian Camel). Bactrian camels from the plains of Central Asia have two humps, in contrast to the same humped camels found in Rajasthan and other parts of India. Bacterial camels, found only in hundur, were an important means of transportation when Ladakh was an important stop on the ancient trade routes with Central Asia.

Khardung-la Pass

Khardong La Pass is a gateway to some of the most fascinating and undiscovered landscapes. This popular mountain pass is equally popular with adventure seekers and regular tourists. Khardong La is located in the Leh District of the Indian Union Territory at an altitude of 5,359 meters. It has the distinction of being the most motorable pass in the world. Historically, Khardong La is significant because it is located on the main caravan route that connects Leh to Kashgar in Central Asia.

The pass in the Ladakh Range is north of Leh and is the gateway to the Shyok and Nubra valleys. The Siachen Glacier is located in the latter part of the valley. Built in 1976, it was opened to public motorized vehicles in 1988. Maintained by the Frontier Roads Organization, the pass is of strategic importance to India as it is used to transport supplies to the Siachen Glacier. The highway is one of the highest motorized highways in the world.

Zoji-La

Zoji La is a high mountain pass in the Himalayas in the Indian union territory of Ladakh. Located at Dras, the pass connects the Kashmir Valley to the west with the Dras and Suru valleys to the northeast and the Indus Valley further east. Zoji La is about 100 km from Srinagar, the capital of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, and 15 km from Sonmarg. It provides a vital link between Ladakh and the Kashmir valley. It runs at a height of about 3,528 meters (11,575 ft) and is the second-highest pass after Fotu La on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway. It is often closed during the winter, although the Border Roads Organization (BRO) is working to extend traffic longer in winter. The Beacon Force unit and the Vijayak Force unit of the BRO are responsible for clearing and maintaining the road during the winter. Driving through the pass in winter means driving between thick walls of ice on both sides.
